The prisoner was employed as a mounted postman between Kelvedon and Tollesbnry, and on April 1 Mead, the postmaster at Kelvedon sent £3 for the quarter's salary of the sub post-mistress at Tollesbury in an envelope, and a receipt to be signed. When the receipt was returned it turned out to be a forgery and the prisoner subsequently handed the £3 to the postmistress stating that he had only borrowed it for a short time. The jury found the prisoner guilty and he was sentenced to 5 years penal servitude.
