There is a seaman's ticket number 287626 issued to John Harry in London on 2 August 1851.(Find My Past)This fact negates the below assumption that John Harry arrived in Australia in 1849.
The SAG (Society of Australian Genealogists) has a ticket of leave for John Henry, dated 30 May 1857, which shows that his ship of transport was the William Morey. State Archives, Sydney have no records of the William Morey arriving in Australia. The nearest name is the William Money which visited Australia twice with assisted emigrants in 1840, arrival Sydney and in 1849, arrival Port Adelaide, South Australia. English census records show John Henry (Harry) living in London in 1841 with his mother and sister. By deduction, and if the ship was indeed the William Money, then John Henry must have left England on 19 September 1848, arriving in South Australia on 3 January 1849. However, the passenger list for the William Money does not show John Harry as a passenger. The ticket of leave mentioned above gives a trial date of 13 February 1855 in Sydney, for the offence of larceny. John Henry (Harry) was found guilty and sentenced to 5 years (plus 5 years concurrent) hard labour on the roads or other public works of the colony. It also states that he was allowed to remain in the district of Goulburn, which is between Sydney and Canberra. There are three court entries for John Henry (Harry) in the records, all for larceny. The first offence was committed on 18 December 1854 and it seems that he was not tried on this charge. The second offence was also committed on 18 December 1854, for which John was sentenced to 5 years hard labour. The third offence was committed on 9 January 1855 and again John was sentenced to 5 years hard labour, which according to the ticket of leave was to be served concurrently with his previous sentence.
From the New South Wales Police Gazette dated 1 Dec 1880 Sydney - A warrant has been issued by the Water Police Bench for the arrest of a man whose name is unknown, but who can be identified, charged with wilfully and obscenely exposing his person in Moore Park on the 27th ultimo. Description - About 45 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, stout build, dark complexion, dark hair turning grey, grizzly beard and whiskers; dressed in dirty grey tweed suit and drab soft felt hat. Complainant, D. C. Robinson, resides in Dowling Street, Moore Park.
Vide Police Gazette, 1880, page 445. John Henry Willingdale, charged on warrant with wilfully and obscenely exposing his person in Moore Park, has been arrested by Sergeant Robinson, Sydney Police. Sentenced to one months imprisonment Darlinghurst Gaol.
John Henry, stonemason, died aged 72 on 14th June 1900 at 7 Pearl Street, Sydney. Cause of death was senile debility, gastric catarrh, and chronic kidney disease. The informant was his son John Willingale.
John Henry was buried on 16th June 1900 in the Church of England Cemetery, Rookwood.
The death certificate shows that he had been born in Wapping, England and had been in Australia for about 50 years. Children were Cecilia 32 years, Catherine 29 years, Thomas 28 years, Hugh 26 years, John H. 21 years and 1 female deceased.
