    • DOUGLAS SCOTT CRAIGIE Douglas Scott Craigie passed away peacefully in Victoria, BC on December 16, 2009, with his family at his side. Doug was born on August 10, 1923 in Winnipeg, MB to John Semple Craigie and Lillian Grace Walden. He grew up in south St. Vital (Winnipeg), MB on the family dairy farm and often herded cows where the St. Vital Centre now stands. Doug was a Second World War veteran and a few years after returning home from overseas, he married Dora Lucy Asher on December 20, 1947. Together they raised two daughters on Humboldt Avenue in St. Vital. He became a firefighter for the City of St. Vital in 1951, retiring in 1985. In June, 1986 he and Dora relocated to Vancouver Island. They resided first in Malahat and then Parksville before moving to Victoria in 2002. Doug was heavily involved in girls' softball at Glenwood Community Club in St. Vital and coached his daughters for many years at both the Midget and Juvenile levels. When his daughters were old enough to play at the Senior B level, he coached a younger Bantam team and chose to retire from the game after they finally won the Manitoba championship! His skills as a coach were truly incredible, with his primary emphasis on sportsmanship and team play. Each player learned to ask the question, If I get the ball, what am I going to do with it? Doug was very proud of the championships won by the various teams he coached, particularly the Manitoba titles. In his younger days, he loved camping and fishing with his buddies, Harold Meredith and Gordon Beaty. He also enjoyed starting flowers and vegetables in his greenhouse and constructing many wood-working projects in his shop. Doug was a quiet, strong man, with a fabulous sense of humour. He suffered from back pain all his adult life, but never, ever complained. He was a gentleman right to the end. He loved watching the Toronto Blue Jays, but often couldn't understand how players who were paid so much could make some of the errors they did! Even his girls wouldn't have made mistakes like that, he would say! Doug was predeceased by his parents and his siblings, Clifford Craigie, William Bill Craigie and Mae Bertrand. He was extremely close to Mae and we always enjoyed watching the two of them interact - so much Craigie humour in one room! Her early passing was devastating to him, but now they are together again. Mourning his passing are Dora, his beloved wife of almost 62 years; his daughters, Linda Dueck of Brandon, MB and Maureen Kerr of North Vancouver, BC; his grandsons, Kevin Bradley (Leah) Spooner of Cold Lake, AB; Shaun Joseph McGrath and Bryan Douglas (Jessica) McGrath both of Vancouver, BC; and his great-grandsons, Kaden Scott Spooner and Aiden Charles McGrath. Respecting Doug's wishes, cremation has taken place and no service will be held. His Scottish frugality shines through one last time! If family and friends so desire, donations may be made in his memory to The Firefighters Burn Fund, 303 - 83 Garry Street, Winnipeg, MB R3C 4J9. We love you dearly and you will be in our hearts forever.
