- Alfred was registered as Alfred Walter Harriss at birth, the illegitimate child of Etherlinda Harriss. No father's name is on the certificate but we know that Etherlinda & Charles Willingale were living as husband & wife from at least 1851 to 1881.

Alfred aged 2 and his brother Charles aged 3 were staying with Frederick Scott & his wife Louisa.
His mother Etherlinda was in Ipswich and his father was possibly living with a woman named Susan in Mile End, London.
