Watched Hotel from Church Tower
As a result of nine days? observation from the tower of a church nine men were before Southend Bench today on betting charges.
Movements of people frequenting the Spread Eagle Hotel were watched from the tower.
As a result of the observations a raid was made on the hotel by six police officers.
Today the licensee, Sidney Willingale was charged with permitting the house to be used for betting purposes. His potman William Gill was charged with assisting and Leonard Millbank, a fancy goods dealer, with using the premises. The other six were charged with "resorting?.
The officers on watch in the church tower noticed unusual liveliness at the hotel during the nine days of observation, stated the Chief Constable, and after the raid betting matter was found on all excepting Willingale and Gill. In Willingale?s bedroom, however, slips and a betting account were found. On the way to the police station he expressed the view that someone had given him away.
All the defendants pleaded not guilty.
