• Notes

  The IGI shows a Philip French and Abigail Blatch marrying 7 February 1797 at St Nicholas Church, Colchester. The following was taken from an 1839 census for Colchester St James - ERO ref D/P 138/1/1 Philip and Abigail French. Occupation Harness Maker, religion Baptist. Owned a bible and prayer book. Addional Notes - Worthy. The 1841 census for East Hill, Colchester 107/344/7 page 10 shows Philip French aged 70, a harness maker who was not born in Essex Abigail French aged 67 who was born in Essex Mary French aged 7 who was born in Essex. (This is the daughter of Philip and Mary Ann Wrigley French). Philip died of Apoplexy on 23 January 1847 aged 76 and the death was registered by I M Churchill, coroner. Philip had been living at Provident Place Colchester St Giles according to the burial record, but the death certificate shows that he died in Chapel Road, Colchester St Giles. He was buried in St Peter Colchester on 29 January 1847 We have a copy of Philip's will in which he left all his furniture, money and property to his wife Abigail.
