1841 census for Eastwood Piece: 337 Book:4 Folio: 8
Page Number: 9
John Burles aged 47, a carpenter
Mary Burles his wife aged 48
Mary his daughter aged 22
Edward his son aged 19
James his son aged 12
Ellen his daughter aged 8
Susannah his daughter aged 5.
We have a death certificate for John Perryn Burles who died in 1849 aged 67, which would have made his birth 1782.
A settlement examination paper dated 15 October 1818 states that John Perryn Burles swears on oath that he is about 34 years old (which makes his d.o.b. about 1784. The paper details that when he was about 14 years of age John was hired by Kickweed Jennings of Great Wakering, a farmer, to be his servant in husbandry at the wages of four pounds.
A John Burles was born to Mary Burles on 28 January 1786 and baptised in North Shoebury on 4 February 1786. This is possibly him although it is still unknown where the name Perryn fits into the picture. There is no marriage in North Shoebury for a Mary Burles marrying a Mr Perryn.
Another possibility is that John is the son of Edward Perrin and Sarah Burles, born before they were married on 29 July 1783 in Great Wakering. This is more likely as a Sarah Perrin was witness to John's marriage to Mary Reeve in 1810. | Burles, John Perryn (I0203)

According to Dorothy Wright (in 1999) Lilian Olive was engaged to a Mr Cole who ran a driving school in Southend. She assumes (but doesn't know for certain) that they married. Olive had two daughters - Joan & Jill who were still quite young when their mother died. The children were then looked after by their grandparents in the farmhouse (High House) in Barling. She doesn't know where their father was but he wasn't with them at the farmhouse. When their grandmother died Joan was old enough to look after her grandfather so she stayed at the farmouse. Jill was still a child and she went to live with her Aunt & Uncle (Geoff & Gwen), who looked after her until she was old enough to make her own way in life. | Murrell, Lilian Olive (I2456)
