  Notes	The following was written by grandson Richard Gravestock "Thomas was a saddler in the British Army and his army papers show that he deserted in Feb 1883, in England. I have always thought that he left the Army with the expressed intention of immediately travelling to America to start a new life and avoid detection. His family travelling out to New York a year later to join him. (they moved to Chicago as a family about 1887). Are all the shipping list arrivals for New York for ths period now indexed? I suppose he could have given a false name to the shipping company when he left England to avoid detection by the police, and then reverted to using his proper name after arrival in New York."
