Notes |
- Although named Elizabeth she used the name Amy on the death certificates of several of her children by John Darke.
Can't find a marriage registration for John Willingale and Elizabeth, and Elizabeth's death registration is as Elizabeth Darke in 1944. For this reason I think John Willingale and Elizabeth did not marry. Her son Llewellyn probably changed his surname back to Darke after John & Elizabeth separated.
Birth Certificate 6827/1869 Father was a hotel keeper. Family were living in Bingarra.
Marriage Certificate2477/1890 First married to John Darke in 1890.
Divorced in 1911 No.7856 DARKE V DARKE.
Elizabeth Darke asked for a dissolution of her marriage with John Ward Darke, on the grounds of habitual drunkenness and habitual cruelty. Mr. H.G. Moss appeared for the petitioner, and Mr. Atkinson for the respondent. The parties were married at Bingara on October 13, 1889, according to the rites of the Methodist Church. The petitioner said that there were 11 children of the marriage, four of whom were dead. Petitioner said she left respondent in April, 1910, two years after the birth of the last child. They had resided at various times at Granville, Cootamundra, Manilla, Hillgrove, Armidale, Newcastle, Bingara, and Parramatta. Petitioner detailed various acts of cruelty and other particulars concerning the conduct of the respondent. She left him in May, 1910, and has since been maintaining herself and family. The respondent denied that he was an habitual drunkard. He also denied using the vile and filthy language attributed to him by the petitioner and other witnesses. The acts of cruelty alleged were not true. He admitted throwing a teapot at his wife, because the latter slandered a relative. His Honor granted a decree nisi, returnable in six months. The petitioner was given the custody of the younger children.
She then had a relationship with John Willingale, had two children Llewellyn Harry and Ferneaux.
