Notes |
- Steve Bush states " William Charles moved to the US before Robert. He lived at 884 Van Buren Street, Brooklyn, NY in 1915. He later moved to 2372 Jamaica Avenue, Richmond Hill, Queens. He subsequently moved to Long Island, NY. He married Marcella and had four children - Harold, Charles, Marcella and Grace. Marcella married someone named Vago and had a daughter named Grace. Grace married and had a daughter named Marcella. Grace may have been Gretchen, who married ( someone named Clinton ? ) and was in a vaudeville act with her husband in 1915. A postcard has them performing at the Prospect Theatre in Brooklyn in March 1915. Charles married before 1935 (probably 1920 -25)"
Found on the 1915 Queens County census at 2372 Jamaica Avenue:
Role Age Born Citizenship Yrs in US
William Wright Head 42 England US 24
Marcella Wife 37 US US 37
Charles Son 19 US US 19
Grace Daugh 17 US US 17
Harold Son 13 US US 13
Marcella Daugh 7 US US 7
William was a salesman, Charles a butcher, Grace an instructor, and the other two were students.
More from Steve Bush :- " I spoke with my mom (who spoke with her cousin Grace and Joyce's mom) about the Long Island Wrights and at last I am getting some useful information. Nobody knows a lot about Wm Charles & his wife. However, they provided the following about his daughters, who must have been born around 1900.
Grace married somebody and had two children, a boy and a girl. The boy was the one in the Coney Island photo I showed you playing with my mom on the beach in about 1926. His name was Eugene, and my mom remembers him at Aunt Dolly's house dressed as a naval officer during the war. Grace died relatively young (say, in the 1930s), and her sister Marcella raised the two children (maybe Grace's husband also died). They think Marcella's husband's name was John Vago (sure about only the last name), who worked in some administrative job for the US POst Office. Marcella wanted to be sure the children were raised Catholic, which caused a stir in the family at the time. Marcella also had at least one child, because she had a granddaughter. Marcella's last address was 70 Lincoln Street, Garden City, Long Island, which is a very nice suburb a short distance outside the city."
Steve Bush checked out the 1900 Federal census for Pittsburgh and found William Charles Wright, listed as a merchant, living at 4601 Butler Street . He was listed as born in April 1871, age 29 and having been married for 6 years to Marcella E Wright. She was born in New York in July 1877 and was aged 22 at the census. Her mother was born in New York as well. They had at the time two children - Charles O. Wright, born February 1896 and Grace I. Wright born August 1897. Both children were born in New York. William also confirmed that he was not an American citizen in 1900 and that the year of emigration was 1891.
The following information was found from the 1920 census for New York:-
William Charles was living at 1145 Jamaica Avenue with his family. He was born in England, aged 47 and emigrated to the US in 1893. (1900 census said 1891) He became a naturalised citizen in 1898 and worked as a salesman for a sewing machine company. His wife was Marcella E Wright aged 42, born in New York. Her father was born in Canada (mother tongue French) and her mother was born in New York (mother tongue English).
Children living at home were Grace I Wright aged 22, born in New York and working as a stenographer in an export house, Harold E Wright aged 18, born in Pennsylvania and working as a clerk in a steel company and Marcella C Wright aged 12, born in Pennsylvania.
Steve Bush checked the US Naturalisation records for William Charles and found that he applied for citizenship in August 1898 and he listed his occupation as bicycles. His arrival date in New York was given as September 27 1891 and he lived at Logan & Jamaica Avenue in Brooklyn. His application was denied so he didn't get his US citizenship at this attempt.
The following was found from the Ellis Island web site. Chas Wright arrived in New York on 26 September 1892 aboard the "Adriatic". He was aged 21, unmarried and had sailed from Liverpool.
William Charles is buried in St John's cemetery in Queens, New York, USA. He died in 1929 aged 57.
