Name |
Leonard George Clarke |
- Hi Linda
I don't know what to say to you about this really. Or more to the point, how much should go on line! All this was a complete mystery to me untill a few years ago when I was doing family research. My dad Leonard Clarke refused to talk about it. So this is what I think happened.
My grandfather was Ralph Bowyer. He and my Nan, Elizabeth Rudd lived together from sometime after the 1911 census, where she can be found as a cook in a house in London, but they were never married. I think it's possible she got pregnant (Henry Ralph Clarke born 20/2/1916) and they moved to Birmingham. WW1 was on and I believe he lived under the assumed name of John Clarke. (I think it may have been to escape conscription) They had all 4 of their children in Birmingham and so all of them were registered as Clarke. When I laid the family tree out on paper I discovered that all of John Clark's children had names containing names of Ralph Bowyer's siblings! My late Aunt - their only daughter - also confirmed recently that John and Ralph were the same man. In the mid 1920s they came back to live in my grandfather Ralph's home area and so had to revert to the name Bowyer. My poor mother, Amy Willingale was very confused because when she married my dad she became Mrs Clarke and was living with her Mother-in-law, Mrs Bowyer which was bad enough, but what she didn't know was she was in fact living with Miss Rudd!
I was born in 1949 and I was registered as Clarke. In 1950/51 my father's and of course the rest of the family's name was changed by deed poll to Bowyer, so we were then the same as the rest of the family.
So Linda, you can see what I mean, I have told you this to clarify it but I don't know how much should be made public.
Regards Eileen
