  • Notes
    • He registered the death of his father Henry Wright in 1937.

At this time Pearson lived at Orchardcroft, Victoria Avenue, Shanklin, Isle of Wight, a guest house previously owned by his wife's family. Pearson and Marion ran the guest house after her mother's death. In 1938 with rumours of war fewer people were holidaying on the Isle of Wight and the family moved on and ended up in Reading where Pearson worked for W H Smith. Later Pearson was moved up north to manage W H Smith in Dewsbury.

He lived with his son Pearson & his wife on and off from about age 78. He then went into a local nursing home when he was 84 and lived there until he died aged 92 on 12 February 1987.

      PEARSON MURRELL WHITTIER WRIGHT (1895 ? 1987)

Pearson Wright was one of the four children of Henry Robert Wright, and his wife Ellen Wright, who ran a newsagent and confectioner?s business at 63 High Road, Tottenham, where the family were all living when Pearson made his case for exemption from military service on grounds of hardship and conscience.

In 1911 he was sixteen and assisting his father in the business. He had been born in Maidenhead though the whole family had originally come from Colchester. Pearson was the second youngest. His older brother George isn?t registered with the rest of the family in 1911 and neither is Ellen his younger sister. His other older brother, Hayden Wyclif is still at home and working as a shirt and collar machinist at a laundry.

Pearson?s case, made in early February 1916, is that he is the only brother remaining at home now that his other brothers have volunteered and that ?on moral and religious convictions, I am unable to undertake military duties?. In his written statement he argues that with his two brothers already serving his father had already made sacrifices and that he is ?indispensable? to his father?s business, ?it is impossible to find a substitute; the only alternative being to dispose of the business?. He doesn?t mention any particular church or religious faith but does say that ?I have always held human life to be sacred? and ?I could not refuse to obey the call of conscience?. He is willing to take up work of national importance and mentions ?the mercantile marine, fishing, fireman etc?. Those last words are underlined in the blue pencil of the tribunal clerk or some other official.

At the local tribunal his case is turned down on the grounds that he hadn?t produced enough evidence but he is allowed to appeal in April and at that hearing he is given exemption from combatant service, his conscientious objection having been accepted. We know no more about what happened to him, during the war. By 1920 the family, by then comprising Henry, Ellen, Pearson and his older brother George, was living in Angell Road, Brixton. His brother Haydn?s marriage to a Margaret M Jones is registered in Lambeth. Pearson marries Laura Willard Riddell 1942 and by 1946 he and Laura are living in Kensington. Her death is registered in Hastings in 1974, aged 72 and Pearson lives on until he is 92, his death is registered at Bromsgrove in Worcestershire.
